Kyle Katarn was born during the Clone Wars on Sulon. His father, Morgan Katarn, was extremely Force-sensitive. After Force pushing a bully when he was a child, Morgan hid his abilities and grew up to marry Patricia and have Kyle.
Morgan's friend, Jedi Master Qu Rahn, escaped Order 66 to find that Morgan's child was equally Force-sensitive, and could be a possible Padawan once the right age was reached. As we all know, Rahn was killed before then.
Kyle became an Imperial stormtrooper, and later, a commander. He was extremely determined to eliminate the Rebel Alliance, since it was made to seem they killed his father. However, Kyle could not bring himself to kill many unarmed Rebel soldiers. Even so, his successful victory over the Rebel troops earned him an award from the Emperor, an award given to him by Inquisitor Jerec, the Dark Jedi who killed Kyle's father.
Undercover agent Jan Ors revealed to Kyle that it was the Empire, not the Rebels, that killed Morgan Katarn. It was this that made Kyle hate the Empire and work as a mercenary for the Rebel Alliance.
It was Kyle that found one-half of the Death Star plans in Dark Forces. When Darth Vader witnessed the aftermath of one of Kyle's raids, he mused that the youth might have become a Jedi.
This of course, leads us to Kyle's search for the Valley of the Jedi, one year after the events of Return of the Jedi. Kyle is approached by 8t88, an insane droid that reveals to Kyle that Dark Jedi Master Jerec, former Padawan of Jocasta Nu, killed Morgan Katarn. 8t88 knows a certain holodisc contains important information regarding the location of the Valley of the Jedi, but Kyle won't tell him how to decipher it. Surrounded by thugs, Kyle does the unthinkable and manages to move so fast as to disable them and steal a blaster. His latent Force abilities are becoming obvious.
After killing thugs and traveling through Nar Shaddaa, Kyle blasts 8t88 and severs his arm that holds the disc. Kyle gets it, but is wounded by blasts from a TIE bomber. Jan, as usual, bails him out, and takes him to a New Republic medical frigate. Unconscious, Kyle receives a vision of Rahn's Force spirit, which commands Kyle to stop Jerec, since his father worked so hard to keep the Valley's location a secret.
When Kyle wakes up, he is confused. His sudden strange abilities (most notably, his ability to sprint really fast) and the vision compell him to get involved in the Force, something the extinct Jedi used. He decides at least to go back to Sulon, where he finds a legion of Grave Tuskens under the command of the Dark Jedi Maw ravaging the homestead. The real treasure, a map to Ruusan on the roof of Morgan's workshop, has already been removed by the Dark Jedi Sariss, Yun, and Boca'seca (AKA Boc). Boc senses a disturbance in the Force when Kyle sneaks into the area, but he is forced to leave quickly with the map.
Meanwhile, Kyle makes short work of the Tuskens and finds Weegee, the family droid. Kyle puts the disc into it, and discovers a message from his father, and an old lightsaber. Morgan pleads that Kyle become what Morgan was afraid to be: a Jedi. With Rahn's lightsaber and journal, Kyle begins (in part jest) a crude Jedi training exercise with some hidden remotes in the shop. Letting himself go, Kyle surprises himself by being able to block the shots with the lightsaber. Intrigued, Kyle hangs on to it, but keeps the Bryar pistol handy.
Still on the hunt for 8t88, who still has the map, Kyle and Jan go to Barons Hed, a city long since ruled by the Empire via Jerec. Kyle sneaks in, and while avoiding thugs, mercenaries, and more Tuskens, discovers that through the Force, he can run twice as fast as a normal human being. Thus, he discovers his first true power: Force Speed.
Eventually breaking into the palace complex, Kyle slaughters countless stormtroopers and finds 8t88 with the map. "I want the map, 8t88!" "All yours, Kyle."
But with a resounding boom, Dark Jedi apprentice Yun destroys the map with his lightsaber and Force-pushes Kyle into a wall. Realizing his Bryar pistol has finally become useless, Kyle brings out the lightsaber. Using all the basic dueling techniques learned at the Imperial Academy at Carida, Kyle trys to best Yun. However, it is Rahn that tells Kyle to close his eyes and let the Force control his actions when Yun mind-tricks him. Though Kyle is doubtful, he decides to trust Rahn, and when Yun Force-jumps down upon Kyle, the mercenary manages to dodge and jab Yun in the side. However, Kyle decides to spare the youth, and he escapes. Kyle makes his exit, taking many stormtroopers down along the way.
Tracking 8t88 to a refueling station outside of Barons Hed, Kyle finds that the droid was destroyed by two more of Jerec's dark side minions, the Dark Side Adepts Gorc and Picarron C. Boodle (AKA Pic). Jerec decided not to pay the pathetic droid, what with the map already in his possession. Gorc and Pic engage Kyle in another duel. Kyle, a bit unnerved from the last duel, manages to blast Gorc square in the head. The enraged Pic unleashed his full fury, fighting Yoda-style and finally knocking the lightsaber out of Kyle's grasp. When Pic trys to stab Kyle with a Sith dagger, Kyle manages to grab 8t88's severed head and smash the mutated Kowakian monkey-lizard with it.
The closeness of that last duel made Kyle decide to peruse the writings in Qu Rahn's journal. Within, he discovers several advanced saber techniques, as well as mentionings of other Force powers. Realizing that the power of the Force and the lightsaber were becoming all-too necessary, Kyle decides to take the Jedi path...if only for a little while. His true test was yet to come...
To be continued.

NOTE: All information is from wookieepedia.com, Abel Pena's Dark Forces Saga, the Dark Forces novella trilogy, the New Essential Chronology, and the Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy Video games.
Kyle downloads the map to Weegee, and discovers the hyperspace lanes to Ruusan, a world forgotten after the war between the Brotherhood of the Sith and the Jedi Army of Light ended a 1000 years ago. Unfortunately, the Empire gets there first, establishing a base. Jerec and his surviving Dark Jedi head there as well. The former Jedi Shadow Maw is thirsting for revenge against Kyle for destroying his Grave Tusken legion.
Kyle and Jan arrive at Ruusan, and Kyle sneaks into the Imperial base. Now, he commands several Force powers, such as Heal, mind-trick, grip, and throw. Kyle can also jump high using the Force, and pull away weapons from his enemies. All of this makes the Imperial forces no match for the up-and-coming Jedi Knight.
However, upon ascending to the top of the valley, Kyle is ambushed at last by the angry Maw. Maw is old, but still strong. Kyle duels him, appyling as much of the Force as possible. He finally breaks Maw down by reminding him of how Qu Rahn chopped off his legs, leaving him as the floating torso he is today. Enraged, Maw misses a swing, and Kyle strikes away his saber. It is now Maw's turn to taunt Kyle, reminding Kyle of the "sweet, slow death" Jerec gave to Morgan, and how it was Maw's "honor" to place Morgan's head on a spike outside of Barons Hed for all to see. Letting the dark side flow through him, Kyle strikes down Maw, much to the pleasure of Jerec, who has captured Jan Ors.
Jerec offers Kyle to become a Dark Jedi, seeing much potential in him. As proof of his alleigance to the dark side, Kyle is ordered to kill Jan. Kyle, despite his occasional misuse of the Force before, decides not to kill Jan, thus proving himself a true Jedi Knight, having passed the trial of spirit that all Jedi apprentices had to face in the days of the Old Republic. Jerec force-pushes Kyle back into the cargo ship, and then allows it crash. It would hopefully be the end of Kyle Katarn...or was it?
To be continued.

Well, it wasn't the end of Kyle. With a little bit of Rahn's help, Kyle found his way off the falling ship in the Moldy Crow. However, the shockwave from the explosion made his ship crash into a rock pinnacle, and Kyle landed unconsciously on the ground.
When Kyle came to, he found the Dark Jedi Boc and Sariss glaring down at him, while Dark Jedi Apprentice Yun, who was much changed since his last encounter with Kyle, stood in the shadows. Boc, realizing here was the disturbance in the Force that he had sensed on Sulon, began to taunt the helpless Kyle. Picking up Rahn's lightsaber, Boc made a mockery of it, calling it "distinctive." He then feinted clumsiness and dropped the weapon. With a crazed laugh, Boc happily crushed the saber with a large rock, claiming that the saber wasn't "so distinctive now, eh?"
Sariss, working under Jerec's orders, sent Boc to inform Jerec of Kyle's imminent execution. As Sariss prepared to splice Kyle with her blue lightsaber, Yun sprang into action, igniting his own saber to block Sariss. Though it only cut her slightly, Sariss slipped and reflexively plunged her saber into Yun. Dismayed at the strange loss of the only person who was like a friend to her, Sariss implored, "Why?"
Yun's dying reply was, "He is a Jedi. He deserves a battle."
With that, Kyle regained his full senses and took up Yun's saber to fend off the enraged Sariss' attack. Firmly walking the path of Jedi Knight, Kyle had finally met his match. Not only was Sariss fully trained in the dark side, but she had superior dueling skills. Luckily for Kyle, he had discovered some classic Jedi fighting techniques from Rahn's journal, and managed to counter Sariss' numerous powers with his own varied knowledge of the Force. However, Sariss began to focus on dueling skills. Kyle finally found an opening in her frenzied attack, and using the ancient Flowing Water Cut, managed to kill Sariss.
Kyle now knew he HAD to stop Jerec; Jan's life depended on it. And he wanted to get back at Boc. Sneaking into the Imperial compound, Kyle furiously slew numerous Imperial troops. His anger was righteous, and he finally burst into the valley core. Dozens of ancient statues of Jedi Knights and Masters, created 1000 years before, surrounded the central core temple, where Jerec was entombed, drawing on the huge well of Force energy created by the deceased Jedi spirits.
Kyle, however, noticed Jan first, and freed her. It was then that Boc struck. Having used his telemetric ability to imitate the appearance of statue himself, Boc came to life in order to kill the Jedi once and for all. Kyle bought time for Jan to escape by distracting Boc (an easily distracted character, "lacking tact and teeth," according to Rahn). Boc proudly displayed his twin purple lightsabers, showing Kyle how he learned how to use Jar'Kai/Niman in the vein of a true Dark Jedi Master.
Kyle battled the Dark Jedi, who Force-jumped incessantly around and about Kyle, taunting him to use the dark side in order to defeat him. Kyle managed to get the upper hand, using his own skills of speed and jumping to beat Boc at his own game. Eventually, Boc began to rely on his own clumsy dueling techniques. The two lightsabers made Kyle hesitate, and it seemed Boc would finally finish the young Jedi once and for all. Yet, Kyle could do something he did not think was possible. Suddenly drawing on the power of the valley, Kyle's power and knowledge of the Force increased exponentially. In that short moment, Kyle re-discovered an ancient Sith technique of hurling dark energy at an opponent. Kyle forged one such spear of midnight black and hurled it at Boc. Consumed by the darkness, Boc fell, laughing til the end. He never noticed that he died at the foot of a statue of his childhood Jedi idol, Newar Froth.
Kyle was bolstered by the Valley's power. But he knew it was Jerec that controlled its full resources. Jerec sensed his presence, and emerged to kill Kyle without hesitation. The aged Dark Jedi Master drew his blood-red lightsaber and charged at Kyle. Having been a Jedi Master prior to the Clone Wars, Jerec's knowledge of the Force was equivilant to that of his old master, Jocasta Nu (who was slain by Darth Vader during the attack on the Jedi Temple). The power of the valley gave Jerec a full channel to the dark side, and Kyle realized he was out of his league.
Even so, Kyle was young, and Jerec needed to be at the source of the power in order to last so long. Blasting Kyle with Force lightning, Jerec ran to the temple to draw on the power of the valley. Kyle pushed away the gigantic statues that Jerec was pulling to block access to the temple. Jerec never had enough time to "recharge," and after some exhaustive dueling, Kyle finally managed to kick Jerec's lightsaber out his had. Lying on the ground, Jerec was at Kyle's mercy.
"Kill me. Give into your hatred. Hahaa...you do remember that it was I who killed your father!" "I haven't forgotten," Kyle soberly replied. And he called Jerec's saber to him. But instead of igniting it and killing Jerec, he threw it at the defeated Mirulaka Jedi Master, prompting Jerec to attack Kyle. Jerec did not waste the opportunity. However, in his careless strike, Kyle moved fast enough to slash Jerec down the chest. As Jerec died, the spirits of the dead Jedi and Sith left his body. Freed from their 1000-year entombment, the spirits illuminated the room, filling it with Force energy.
Little did Kyle know, but he had fulfilled an ancient prophecy: "A Knight shall come, a battle will be fought, and the spirits will go free." Even so, Kyle found great satisfaction in Jan's survival. The path to becoming the Jedi that Morgan and Rahn had always hoped he would be had been rushed and dangerous. But in the end, Kyle knew where his loyalties lay, and became proud to call himself a Jedi Knight. As a token of respect and remembrance, Kyle used Yun's lightsaber to carve two more statues in the valley: one for Rahn, and one for his father.
At the same time, Jedi Master Luke Skywalker quit his job as General in the New Republic army. Having lost connection with other going-ons in the galaxy, Luke was especially interested in Kyle's story. The fact that one man could best seven of the Emperor's former Dark Jedi was most impressive, and here Luke saw a seed for the restart of the Jedi Order.
But what how would Kyle feel about this? Find out later.
